Teaching Philosophy
Jen Johnston, Ph.D.
My teaching philosophy emphasizes the importance of fostering an interactive environment that encourages student engagement and active learning. My primary goal is to foster an atmosphere where students can develop their analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills while learning the subject. I recognize that each student has individual needs and interests, so I strive to create curricula responsive to those needs. As such, I regularly incorporate diverse teaching techniques into my lessons, such as lectures, debates, simulations, case studies, class discussions, and hands-on activities.
I believe it is essential for students to understand what they are learning and why they are learning it; thus, I emphasize connecting course material to real-world applications and making connections between topics explored in different classes. I also strive to utilize technology whenever possible, to give students exposure to cutting-edge solutions and the latest developments in their field of study.

I am committed to creating a safe environment that values the diversity of opinion and encourages students to question established assumptions. Throughout my courses, I provide numerous opportunities for students to develop their problem-solving skills through inquiry, analysis, research, collaboration, and creative thinking. My goal is for each student to apply the knowledge they gain from my class in meaningful ways during their academic experience and later in life. Ultimately, I hope that our classroom experience will help prepare them for success in any future endeavors they pursue.
Lastly, I recognize the importance of creating a mutually respectful relationship with my students. I view each student as an individual and strive to create a learning atmosphere conducive to their success. I am committed to providing ample feedback to ensure that each student gets the most out of their experience and leaves the course feeling empowered and equipped to apply what they have learned. This approach has enabled me to develop meaningful connections with my students that extend beyond the classroom setting and motivate them toward achieving their goals.

In summary, my teaching philosophy centers around fostering an active learning environment where all students can succeed while developing important skills for future endeavors. My ultimate goal is for every student to gain valuable knowledge from our time together, feel motivated about their studies, and reach their fullest potential. This is the foundation upon which I strive to build my courses and engage with my students.

“The class was very well organized and I enjoyed all the activities. They helped me understand the concepts and learning objectives. Even though it was online, I was still able to understand the objectives for each week.”

“Dr. Johnston was amazing, and I can genuinely say she has been my favorite professor at UGA. I have already recommended that several students take her course. I have never felt so comfortable, heard, and motivated in a classroom before.”

“Professor Johnston was an absolutely amazing professor. She without a doubt has a gift for teaching and was the best professor I have had in my college career. She is so kind, compassionate, and caring towards her students. Although attendance was not required, just about all of her students WANTED to attend class, which is rare for college students. She went above and beyond for us and taught me so much this semester. I truly mean it when I say this, she deserves an A+++++!”
